The first step Radiography and Sonography job applicants need to take is get accreditation with the Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR). For international job applicants, this process can take roughly 16 weeks to complete, depending on your actual qualifications. Once you have accreditation from the Institute of Radiography, this is the point when you can actually apply for radiography jobs in Australia. If you are a sonographer, you will have to complete this step first and then also apply for accreditation by the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry.
There are different registration requirements and licences to practice radiography and use irradiating apparatus according to which state you are planning to practice in. Your application for your state licence or registration will require a Statement of Accreditation acquired from the Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR), so you will need to acquire this first to use as part of your application. Even if you intend to practice ultrasound only, sonography jobs in Australia legally require you to acquire the abovementioned accreditation with the Australian Institute of Radiography. Once this requirement has been fulfilled, the next step is to apply for accreditation with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR). You will then be given a an accreditation card and number. These are the requirements you must fulfill before being able to legally practice ultrasound in Australia and begin to apply for sonography jobs. As long as you have fulfilled these requirements, however, you will be able to legally practice ultrasound in any state in Australia.
Accreditation to Practice Occupational Therapy Jobs
Occupational therapists who have qualified overseas and want to work in Australia must undergo an assessment by the Council of Occupational Therapy Registration Boards (COTRB).
Of the eight states and territories in Australia, four do not require registration to practice occupational therapy. These are NSW, ACT, VIC and TAS. In these states, you able to practice once you have successfully completed the COTRB practice audit.
The four states which require registration to practice occupational therapy are SA, QLD, WA and NT. Apart from completing the COTRB practice audit, you will also have to contact the relevant Occupational Therapy Registration Board if you would like to practice in any of these areas. |
